New Again; Antique Desk Makeover

With a new house comes new furniture.  And in this case; old furniture.

D002Of all the furniture we already had and all of the furniture we purchased new… my very favorite piece in my home is one that my Aunt acquired and made over for me

An antique desk that dates back to pre-1930.  It is small yet it has a big presence.

To begin, my Aunt removed the hardware, doors & drawers then sanded the old varnish and stain off of the desk.  Because I wanted to keep the original hardware I painted the metal pieces black while my Aunt painted the desk the perfect shade of gray.

She used a high gloss paint and primer spray can in dark gray to accomplish the color.  After letting the first coat rest she applied a second coat before applying two coats of spray lacquer.  The outcome – a shiny beautiful new blog writing space!

The hardest part of this project for me was finding the perfect chair for the desk that I had fallen in love with.  After visiting every store I could think of (some of them twice) and searching through my favorite online shopping sites, my husband and I came across an animal print gem.  (Note:  my husband is  NOT a fan of animal print.  AT.  ALL.)  After convincing my hubs that this chair was “THE CHAIR” – we purchased it, found fabric that would offer forgiveness for the animal print that once existed and recovered the chair cushion.  Perfect.

I am absolutely pleased with the outcome of my old hand-me-down refinished desk and my new reupholstered chair…

Many thanks to my Aunt & my hubs!
