As a mother, the gifts that truly warm my heart are the ones that my boys spent their time creating. There is just something about the look in a child’s eyes when they extend their arm to hand off a piece of  construction paper filled with scribbles. The purest of love can be felt when that sparkle appears in a child’s eye and an accomplished smile stretches across their face.

While chocolate, jewelry and pedicures are all lovely Mother’s Day gifts; the gifts made at the cost of time are often the most special. And those gifts are often the ones that are cherished the longest.

I still have the first family pictures that each one of my boys drew for me. The ceramic dish that my now 22 year old hand crafted when he was in kindergarten still holds my most worn jewelry and the pot he painted for me in 6th grade Sunday School will forever be filled. Those times that my boys pridefully passed me a gift that they made from the heart made my day. Those very gifts still make my days.

My six year old helped me create this handmade gift tutorial. While he was painting the pot he made my day once again when he informed me that the pot he was painting for our tutorial was for me.

We were able to find everything that we needed to create this Mother’s Day gift at Walmart. The American Greetings tissue paper, cards and gift bags were on aisle I5 in the front of our local Walmart store.

Directions:

One sheet of American Greetings Tissue Paper will make two carnation flowers. Begin by continually folding one sheet of tissue paper until you reach a square that is a little larger than the circle object you plan to trace. (Mason jar lids work great.)

Draw a circle onto the folded tissue with a pencil then cut through the layers of tissue. Divide the tissue circles in half. Press a pipe cleaner through the center of one stack of tissue paper circles then fold the tip of the pipe cleaner to secure it to the tissue.

Gently separate the pieces of tissue. Pull each layer up and slightly bend all sides inward. Continue this step until the tissue layers have formed a full carnation. Shape the pipe cleaner to create leaves by wrapping the pipe cleaner around a pencil or finger.

You may want to paint your terracotta pot before you create your Tissue Paper Carnation Flowers to allow dry time.  Once you do paint the pot and it has had ample time to dry spray a light coat of Acrylic Sealer Spray over the painted pot.

When the pot is completely dry create a ball out of the play dough then press the Tissue Paper Carnation Flowers into the play dough.
