First you create the bowling pins next you build the pyramid then you play the game! This simple DIY Bowling game is made from upcycled tin cans and it makes for a great time outdoors.
Whether you are looking for a game to play in the backyard or on your next camping trip, this game is for you. You’ll just need tin cans, some spray paint and a ball.
As a family of four we go through a lot of vegetable cans. I decided to save the 24 ounce size cans with the hope that I would collect enough to create a game to take on our next camping trip. And I did!!
With two boys the time spent looking for a ball was much shorter than the dinners it took to collect 10 cans. Our youngest happens to be obsessed with winning those 5 inch knobby balls found in amusement park claw machines (or on Amazon). It turns out that they are the perfect size for our upcycled game on grass. A small playground ball that is made of thicker rubber works best for playing on more rugged ground while camping.
DIY Bowling Outdoor Activity
SUPPLIES:
- 10 empty Vegetable Cans
- Spray Paints
- Ball
DIRECTIONS:
Creating an outdoor game does not get much easier than this! Simply remove the labels from the cans, clean and dry the insides then spray paint them. If you would like for your tin cans to look more like “real” bowling pins just add painter’s tape and paint over it to create lines.
GAME TIME:
Get creative with your DIY Bowling outdoor game! We play ‘pyramid bowling’ at our house.
Scoring doesn’t have to be as difficult as it is at the bowling alley. In our pyramid bowling game we give one point per can. You can make it a little more challenging by aiming just to knock out the center can for 11 (or more) points! Our little guy has accomplished that just ONE time. We gave him 100 points for just knocking out the center can.
However it is that you play and whatever point system you use… HAVE FUN!!
Safety note:
Beware of the cans open edges!! I use a can opener that leaves a lip free of sharp edges on my cans. Pull tab cans will leave a clean edge.
